Bitcoin dropped to approximately $82,200 as Brent crude climbed following a report on potential U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran. The geopolitical tension and rising oil prices intensified market liquidations and inflationary pressures.

In today’s Bitcoin updates, the price of BTC has dropped 2.1% over the past 24 hours, while Brent crude has advanced 2.7% to reach $111.73 a barrel. Early Thursday, October 22, Bitcoin declined from nearly $85,000 down to approximately $82,200.

According to a report published by The New York Times, American and Israeli military planners have prepared potential strikes against Iran to take place following the November 3 midterms, driving up crude prices. The story broke shortly after midnight UTC, and the sell-off began an hour later.

The key questions now are how close Washington and Tehran are to renewing hostilities, and how far Bitcoin’s correction might extend.

Bitcoin News: Why Did BTC Drop From $84,800 to $82,190 Today?

The downturn stemmed from a sudden reversal in the Iran geopolitical narrative. On Wednesday, BTC climbed to $84,898 as U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds brought in $524.8 million, according to figures from Farside. Following the publication of the strike report at roughly 00:35 UTC, BTC shed about $800 during the 01:00 UTC hour alone.

Leveraged positions exacerbated the move. Data from OKX indicates that Bitcoin futures open interest—the aggregate value of outstanding derivative contracts—dropped from $3.47 billion at midnight to $3.27 billion by 07:00 UTC, wiping out or closing out about $200 million in positions on a single exchange over seven hours.

Is the US-Iran Tension Escalating Again?

Technically speaking, yes. Citing U.S. officials, The Times stated that the contingency strategy involves a targeted, intensive campaign directed at Iranian nuclear facilities, missile systems, drone networks, and energy assets. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week, and the nations’ respective air forces have conducted training exercises over Iraq.

No operational strikes have received formal approval thus far. President Trump has repeatedly rejected a return to large-scale conflict this year, and the White House declined to address reports regarding strategies “that may or may not exist.” Earlier this month, Trump asserted that the U.S. would hold off on any military action ahead of the midterms due to “productive discussions.”

Those diplomatic efforts currently appear stalled. A June agreement facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar has run aground regarding commercial shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran stating on Wednesday that there is minimal basis for optimism.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Can $80,400 Hold As Oil Price Is Soaring

Crude prices influence Bitcoin primarily through interest rates. Oil at $111 maintains persistent inflationary pressures, coinciding with a rise in the 10-year Treasury yield to 5.15%. When fixed-income assets offer such yields, non-yielding digital assets face stiffer competition for capital.

Market participants are watching the $80,400 threshold closely. BTC is currently trading roughly $1,400 above its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) of $80,874, with the $80,394 swing low positioned just underneath.

Key technical levels on the daily timeframe include:

  • Immediate resistance: $82,850, representing the recent swing high that BTC slipped back beneath.
  • Major resistance: $84,100 to $84,900, covering Wednesday’s closing price and daily peak.
  • Immediate support: $80,394 to $80,874, comprising the swing low and the 50-day EMA.
  • Secondary support: $76,182, aligned with the 200-day EMA.

Should geopolitical tensions subside, Brent crude could retreat below $110, potentially allowing BTC to retest the $84,900 mark. If market volatility persists, BTC may consolidate between $80,400 and $84,900 leading up to the Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 27–28. Conversely, actual confirmation of military strikes or disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could drive oil higher and push Bitcoin below its 50-day EMA toward $76,182.

While the proposed strikes may never materialize, every headline concerning Iran will remain a primary driver for Bitcoin markets until November 3 passes.
