BNB Slides 8.7% After $6.36B Hack as Traders Turn Bearish

On Thursday, October 29, the BNB cryptocurrency experienced an 8.7% plunge within an hour—sliding from $744.90 to $680—following news that hackers had siphoned approximately $6.36 billion from Binance, marking the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
Subsequent recovery efforts have shown the weakest momentum among major digital assets. BNB currently changes hands at $702, reflecting a 24-hour decline of 6.2%, a market capitalization of $92.4 billion, and a 48.7% drop from its peak of $1,370 reached in October 2025. Within the futures market, investors holding short positions are currently paying funding fees to maintain those bets.

This raises several questions: Why is BNB absorbing the impact of the hack more severely than Bitcoin, how did the token react to previous security incidents at Binance, and what are the critical price thresholds to monitor?

Why Is BNB Falling Harder Than Bitcoin?

The severity of the drop stems from BNB’s direct association with Binance, a connection that futures traders are actively targeting. Measured against its price at 20:00 UTC on Thursday, BNB remains down 5.6%, underperforming Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and Dogecoin.

The exploit itself bypassed the BNB Chain entirely. According to an incident breakdown by TRM Labs, the attacker drained Binance wallets across ten different blockchains—ranging from Ethereum to Polygon—none of which included BNB Chain. Instead, market participants are reacting to exchange-related risk: because BNB serves as Binance’s native token, a blow to the platform is interpreted as a blow to the asset itself.

“The Binance exploit has intensified market-wide selling, with BNB facing the greatest exposure,” noted Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research. Conversely, Rick Maeda of Laevitas characterized the downturn as “quite modest for possibly the largest exchange theft ever.”

Sentiment in the futures sector leans bearish. Data from OKX indicates:

  • Negative funding rates. The funding rate for BNB perpetual contracts shifted from +0.01% prior to the security breach to −0.0266% at midnight and −0.0434% at 08:00 UTC, meaning short sellers are now compensating long holders. By contrast, Bitcoin’s funding rates remained positive throughout the same period.
  • An increase in open interest. Open interest climbed by 20%, moving from $54.8 million to $66 million as new trading positions were established following the drop.
  • A high proportion of long accounts. The ratio stands at 2.79 long positions for every short, rising from a pre-hack level of 2.66.

Taken together, these indicators suggest that numerous retail accounts are buying the dip while a smaller group of larger traders initiates short positions. Should BNB rebound, these short positions could fuel a short squeeze; conversely, a downward break would pressure the crowded long positions.

What Did BNB Crypto Do After Binance’s Last Security Scares?

During past security breaches, the asset initially experienced steeper declines before mounting a full recovery within 30 days. Binance has faced similar incidents twice before:

  • May 7, 2019: Hackers stole 7,000 BTC from a Binance hot wallet. BNB dropped 17.5% from its pre-hack closing price to hit a low of $18.30 three days later, but rebounded by 39.2% one month later.
  • October 6, 2022: An exploit involving a vulnerability in the BNB Chain bridge allowed an attacker to mint 2 million BNB, valued at roughly $570 million. BNB reached a low of $256.80 a week afterward—down 12.7% from its pre-hack close—before gaining 20.5% over the subsequent 30 days.

In the current scenario, BNB has fallen up to 8.7% below its pre-hack valuation at its worst point thus far. Should it follow historical patterns, a further leg down could precede any eventual recovery.

Market observers frequently draw comparisons to FTT, the token associated with FTX, which lost virtually all its value during the exchange’s collapse in November 2022. However, analysts point out a key distinction in the balance sheets: FTX had misappropriated customer funds and was unable to fulfill withdrawals, whereas Binance has stated it will absorb all losses resulting from the hack. Additionally, entities including Tether and Circle froze approximately $2.7 billion of the stolen assets within hours.

Even so, traders remain cautious. Binance has not yet detailed how it plans to finance the payout, and withdrawals remain suspended pending a platform reopening anticipated within 48 hours of its Friday morning update.

BNB Crypto Price Analysis: Can BNB Hold Its 200-Day EMA?

The token is clinging to support by a narrow margin. BNB closed Thursday at $698.46, sitting just above its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) of $692.46 after an intraday wick during the hack dropped below it to $680. Meanwhile, the 50-day EMA at $733.06 remains overhead as resistance.

The four-month price action returns BNB to levels last seen in late August. After trading in a range between $674.60 and $726 for two weeks, the asset broke out in early September to reach $809.99 on October 5. Thursday’s sell-off completely wiped out those gains.

Outlook Trigger Level to watch
Rebound A daily close above $733.06, the 50-day EMA $745.74, the pre-hack level
Holding pattern Holding between $674.60 and $722.08 Range trade around the 200-day EMA until withdrawals reopen
Sell-off A daily close below $674.60 $600, the mid-August base

For BNB, the immediate 48-hour window holds greater significance than any technical indicator. A seamless restoration of Binance withdrawal capabilities would leave short sellers positioned incorrectly in a crowded trade. Conversely, any technical delays or indications that Binance is liquidating BNB holdings to cover the hack could place the $674.60 support level under threat.
