On Monday, October 19, JPMorgan’s blockchain division, Kinexys, launched JPM Coin (JPMD)—its tokenized dollar deposit—on the Ethereum mainnet for approved institutional clients. This enables crypto firms and banks to settle transactions using JPMorgan dollars directly where the majority of tokenized assets are traded. Despite being the major Ethereum story of the week, the broader market showed little reaction.

Ethereum was trading at $2,380.10, registering a 2.48% drop over a 24-hour period. This development raises questions about what the bank actually altered and why it chose Ethereum.

This decision introduces an additional operating environment for institutions handling assets and transfers across both Ethereum and Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network developed by Coinbase.

Ethereum News: Why Did JPMorgan Add Ethereum Next to Base?

Liquidity served as the primary motivation. Kinexys noted that Ethereum’s “established depth of onchain liquidity and tokenized assets” positioned it as the logical next public blockchain for JPMD, which also remains active on Base following its launch there last November.

As a result, JPMD can now be transferred peer-to-peer among authorized clients across both platforms. Emma Landriault, Kinexys Labs’ global head, explained that cryptocurrency businesses can leverage the token for payments, while financial institutions can utilize it to back tokenized assets or settle trades—referring to funds, bonds, and other holdings recorded on a blockchain.

Landriault described the deployments on Base and Ethereum as a means to grant clients “multi-chain optionality for moving wholesale money across both the web3 and traditional finance ecosystems.” Essentially, the bank aims to have its dollars present wherever trading activity occurs.

This architecture functions because JPMD is distinct from a standard stablecoin. Each token represents a direct claim on cash reserves held at JPMorgan, secured by the institution’s balance sheet, and its transferability is restricted to approved clients even on an open network like Ethereum. In contrast, USDC is issued by a separate entity backed by distinct reserves. For corporate treasurers, a bank deposit fits into established accounting practices.

Furthermore, trading activity is concentrated on Ethereum, where decentralized applications host $49.4 billion in total value, according to DefiLlama.

How Big Is JPM Coin Next to JPMorgan’s Payments?

The exact circulation of JPMD remains undisclosed by JPMorgan. The closest available metric is the Kinexys platform as a whole, which processes upwards of $7 billion daily. Given that JPMorgan’s traditional payments business handles roughly $12 trillion a day, Kinexys accounts for approximately 0.06% of that overall volume.

Ethereum is also just one of multiple networks being integrated. In January, JPMorgan announced plans to introduce JPMD to the Canton Network, a blockchain tailored for regulated entities. Domestically, JPMorgan is collaborating with Citi, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo on a shared tokenized deposit network through The Clearing House, which was reported in June as targeting a debut in the first half of 2027.

Rather than committing to a single blockchain, the bank is deploying the same deposit product across all rails utilized by its clients, allowing market volume to dictate adoption.
